Kedarnath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand.

According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings for redemption. Lord Shiva took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground at Kedarnath, leaving his hump visible at the site associated with the present shrine.

Other manifestations of Lord Shiva are traditionally associated with Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. Together with Kedarnath, these shrines form the sacred Panch Kedar pilgrimage.
