CHARM OF RANIKHET
INTRODUCTION
Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, India. It is home to the Military Hospital, Kumaon Regiment and Naga Regiment, and is well maintained by the Indian Army. Ranikhet is situated at an altitude of 1,869 metres above sea level and offers beautiful views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
Ranikhet, which means “Queen’s Meadow” in Hindi, gets its name from a local legend. It is believed that Raja Sudhardev won the heart of his queen, Rani Padmini, at this very place, and she chose it as her residence, giving it the name Ranikhet, although no palace exists today.
Historically, Ranikhet was once under Nepalese rule. Later, it was regained by the Kumaonis under the leadership of General Kashi Nath Adhikari with the support of the British around 1816, after which it became part of India.
Ranikhet, often referred to as the “Queen’s Meadow,” is a charming hill station nestled in the Kumaon Hills. Known for its lush green forests, panoramic Himalayan views, colonial architecture and peaceful atmosphere, it is an ideal destination for relaxation and rejuvenation.
