Location:

Vaishno Devi is situated at an altitude of 1,584 meters (5,200 feet) above sea level in the Trikuta Mountains, approximately 60 kilometers from Jammu.

Base Town:

Katra serves as the base camp for the pilgrimage, where devotees begin their journey towards the holy shrine.

Significance:

The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi, a manifestation of Shakti and an incarnation of Goddess Durga. It is believed that visiting the shrine fulfills devotees’ wishes and brings spiritual peace.

Mythological Significance:

According to legend, Goddess Vaishnavi was created by the combined energies of Goddess Parvati, Lakshmi, and Saraswati to eliminate evil. She later took refuge in the Trikuta Mountains and defeated the demon Bhairon Nath. The Bhairon Temple is also an important part of the pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage:

The trek from Katra to the holy cave is approximately 13 kilometers and takes around 5–8 hours. The journey includes important stops like Adhkuwari, Sanjichhat, and Bhairon Temple.

Main Attractions:

Adhkuwari: A sacred cave where the goddess is believed to have meditated for nine months.

Sanjichhat: The highest point on the route offering panoramic views of the mountains.

Bhairon Temple: A temple visited after the main darshan, believed to complete the pilgrimage.

Modes of Travel:

Devotees can undertake the journey on foot or opt for ponies, palanquins, battery-operated vehicles, or helicopter services from Katra to Sanjichhat.
