MADHYA PARDESH JOYTRILING TOUR
INTRODUCTION
A Jyotirlinga or Jyotirlingam is a devotional representation of the Supreme God Shiva. Jyoti means 'radiance' and lingam the 'image or sign' of Shiva; Jyotirlingam thus means the Radiant Sign of the Almighty Shiva. There are twelve traditional Jyotirlinga shrines in India.
According to the Shiva Mahapurana, once Brahma, the god of creation, and Vishnu, the preserver, had an argument over supremacy. To settle the debate, Lord Shiva appeared as a huge infinite pillar of light, the Jyotirlinga, piercing the three worlds.
Vishnu and Brahma set out in opposite directions to find the end of this light. Vishnu accepted defeat, while Brahma falsely claimed that he had found the end. This angered Lord Shiva, who cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped despite being the creator.
The Jyotirlinga is considered the supreme, formless reality of Shiva, from which he appeared in another form known as Lingodbhava. These shrines are sacred temples where Shiva is believed to have manifested as a fiery column of light.
