INTRODUCTION
Chopta is a small region of meadows and evergreen forest area which is a part of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary located in Uttarakhand, India. It serves as a base for trekking to Tungnath, the third temple of Panch Kedar, which lies 3.5 kilometres away. Located at a distance of 1.5 kilometres from Tungnath is Chandrashila, rising to over 4,000 metres.
Chopta is an unspoiled natural destination lying in the lap of the Uttarakhand Himalayas and offers views of the majestic Himalayan range including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. It is located at an elevation of 2,680 metres above sea level. Chopta is situated at an altitude of about 2,680 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas. It serves as the base for treks to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and Chandrashila, a summit offering panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges including Nanda Devi, Trishul and Chaukhamba. The region is covered with lush green meadows and dense forests of pine, deodar and rhododendron, providing a serene and untouched environment.
Trekking Paradise:
Tungnath Temple Trek: This 5 km trek from Chopta leads to the ancient Tungnath Temple, the highest among the Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The trek is moderate and offers scenic beauty along with a spiritual experience.
Chandrashila Summit Trek: An additional 1.5 km trek from Tungnath leads to Chandrashila summit at about 4,000 meters, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges, especially beautiful during sunrise.
